Six miles up the road, not two counties
Choice DJ works out of a base near Paddock Wood, roughly six miles from Tonbridge. That is a short run down the road rather than a trek up a motorway, and it shows in the practical side of the night. We arrive with time to spare, set up and sound-check properly, and are finished and out of the way before guests are anywhere near the room. If the venue wants an early load-in so the room can be turned round after the meal, that is a simple ask rather than a scheduling problem. At the other end of the night there is no clock-watching either — nobody is cutting the last twenty minutes short because they have two hours of driving ahead of them. A site visit is a quick trip too, so access, power and layout get sorted before the date instead of on it.

Tonbridge is a market town built round a castle and a river, and the rooms reflect that mix. There are town hotels and function suites, golf and country clubs on the edges, village halls in the surrounding parishes, converted barns out in the Weald, and marquees on private land where the ground allows it. Each of those behaves differently once it is full of people. A high-ceilinged hall with hard walls throws sound everywhere, a marquee swallows it, and a low-beamed room needs the volume kept off the tables while the floor still feels loud. We size the sound and lighting to the space rather than turning up with one rig and hoping. Weddings are the bulk of what we do, and a wedding DJ set has the same shape whether the reception is in a hotel suite or a barn — ceremony music if you want it, a microphone that works for the speeches, background music through the meal, then an evening set that builds instead of stalling. Birthdays and anniversaries are a different job: a wider spread of ages on the floor at once, and a set that has to move between them without losing anybody. Plenty of people round here still call that disco hire, and that is fine — same DJs, same rig, same night. Corporate events, staff parties and Christmas dos work the same way. Our DJs come from clubbing backgrounds, so you get proper mixing and proper selection, and none of the cheesy mic work that turns a room into a school disco. We take requests through the night and read them against the room rather than dropping them in and hoping.

Are you actually based near Tonbridge?
Yes. Choice DJ works out of a base near Paddock Wood, about six miles away — genuinely local rather than a firm covering Tonbridge from the far side of the county. In practice that means an unhurried setup, an early load-in if your venue wants one, and a DJ who plays to the last song without one eye on a long drive home.
Is disco hire the same as DJ hire?
For our purposes, yes. Disco hire is the older phrasing and plenty of people round here still use it. Book a wedding DJ or a birthday disco and you get the same thing: a club-trained DJ, a full sound system, lighting sized to the room, and someone reading the floor through the night. The difference is the word, not the night.
